Yijinjing is an ancient Chinese exercise regimen with a long and complex history1.

There are two main theories about its origin1:

1.The Theory of Bodhidharma’s Creation

It is said that during the Liang Dynasty in the Southern and Northern Dynasties period, Bodhidharma, a monk from South India, came to the Central Plains and lived in Shaolin Temple in Henan. He created “Yijinjing” to help monks exercise and get rid of physical problems so that they could better understand Buddhism1. However, this theory has been questioned and denied by many scholars1.

 2.The Theory of Taoist Origin

Most scholars believe that Yijinjing originated from the Taoist guiding technique in ancient China1. The guiding technique dates back to the Pre-Qin period and was recorded in books as early as the 2nd century BC1. It is a health preservation activity mainly focusing on breathing exercises1. During the Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties period, it was introduced into Shaolin Temple and became a fitness method for monks to promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis after meditation. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the “Shaolin version” of Yijinjing began to spread among the people.

In the 21st century, the health preservation effect of Yijinjing has been gradually valued by people1. In 2004, it was listed as a “secret script of Shaolin martial arts” by Shaolin Temple, and in 2021, it was included in the fifth batch of national intangible cultural heritage representative projects1.
